I’m back!!!

Did you miss me?  Don’t answer that :)  I’ve certainly missed the daily Navy trivia and, believe it or not, doing the Body Rock and Cto5k workouts.  I’m sure my body will hate me for the first few days getting back into the regular schedule, but I can honestly say that I’d rather be sore than sitting around doing nothing all day.  Before I give you the details of today’s workout I guess I should talk about the ensign trivia question.  Lostartpublishing provided half of the answer and will receive 50 points as partial credit, but the correct answers are as follows: an ensign is a commissioned officer between the rank of Chief Warrant Officer and Lieutenant Junior Grade; the ensign is the national flag.  There aren’t that many vocabulary words left to cover, which means you have about a week before I’ll be moving on to even tougher subject matter for the trivia questions.  Get ready, but NO CHEATING!

Navy trivia of the day

  • What is a flag officer?

Today’s workout was a killer, especially the Body Rock workout with its focus on the legs.  The sit up workout wasn’t too bad, but that’s probably because I switched to the first column from the second.  I forgot to complete the exhaustion test at the end of last week and I figured 41-50 push ups was about as much as I could probably do without stopping, so I decided to change it up accordingly.

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • Since there are 6 combinations, each was repeated 2 times (hence the two numbers)
  • Squat jumps: 22, 20
  • Squat leaps: 14, 14
  • 3-tier push ups (modified box): 9, 15
  • Close push ups (modified box): 15, 16
  • Squat and press: 28, 24
  • Switch lunges: 25, 23
  • My legs are seriously dead after this one

Sit up workout details (Day 1, first column):

  • 26, 30, 23, 23, 41; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 143 total

Don’t forget to send in your trivia answer!  See you tomorrow!

I’m not dead yet

Sorry for the lack of a post yesterday.  It was a full day, to say the least.  I’m back now so let’s get back to business.  First, two of the three definitions for geedunk were submitted, one by Glenn and one by lostartpublishing.  Each of you will receive 33 points for correctly guessing 1/3 of the answer.  The compete definition for geedunk is as follows: candy, gum, or cafeteria.  Second, Glenn was also the only person to identify the Monty Python reference from my last post and will be awarded 50 points for his efforts.  Are you ready for today’s question?

  • To what does the term liberty refer?

Third, it’s confession time, again.  As I mentioned earlier, yesterday was beyond busy and, as a result, I was unable to complete any part of my scheduled workout.  To make up for that mishap I clumped all the workouts from yesterday and today into a mega exercise party.  Unfortunately, today was also rather busy and I was only able to finish the Body Rock, sit up, and push up portions.  Sadly, the Cto5k run will have to be pushed to tomorrow’s schedule, but after that I’ll be caught up.

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • Since there are 6 combinations, each was repeated 2 times (hence the two numbers)
  • Box jump & 1/2 burpee: 4.5, 3
  • Lunges: 25, 23
  • 3-Point jump & L/R knee to elbow touches: 5, 7
  • Side leaps: 35, 30
  • Tricep dip & knee tuck: 6.5, 6
  • Walking pike push ups: 4, 4.5

Sit up workout details (Day 1, second column):

  • 27, 33, 24, 24, 33; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 141 total

Push up workout details (Day 1, first column):

  • 12, 14, 11, 10, 16; performed with a 60 second rest between reps
  • 63 Total

Finally, tomorrow will be another megapost.  I hope all of you will check in then to see if I’ve made more progress toward fulfilling my fitness goals.  To make sure my scale is accurate I’ll do my best to remember to weigh myself while I’m at the DEP meeting.  In the meantime, don’t forget to send in you response to the trivia question.  Even if you aren’t sure that your answer is correct, send it in!  You won’t get penalized for a wrong answer, so you don’t have anything to lose.  See you tomorrow!

Yawn

This post is going to be short and to the point.  No winner from yesterday.  Correct definition of brightwork: brass or shiny metal kept polished rather than painted.  Before posting today’s question, please remember: no checking the definition before posting your answer!

Navy trivia of the day

  • What is the scullery?

All of today’s workouts, sit up workout and Body Rock workout, were completed!

Sit up workout details (Day 3, second column):

  • 24, 32, 23, 23, 32; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 134 total

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • Since there are only 4 combinations, each was repeated 3 times (hence the three numbers)
  • 2 Press up/tuck jump & 10 straight punches: 3, 2.5, 2.5
  • 2 Press up/tuck jump & 10 hook punches: 2.75, 2.25, 2.25
  • 2 Press up/tuck jump & 10 combo punches (alternating 2 straight and 2 hook punches for 10 reps): 3, 2.75, 2
  • 2 Mid reach sit ups & 2 high reach sit ups: 8, 4.75, 5

Sorry for being so short.  I will be better tomorrow.

Confess. Confess! CONFESS!!!

Congrats to my two trivia buffs!  Glenn was the first to correctly guess that yesterday’s post title was a reference to Dr. Strangelove–50 points to you– and lostartpublishing was the first to correctly guess the answer to the deep six trivia question: to dispose of by throwing over the side–100 points to you.

I can’t take it any more!  I should confess before they bring out the comfy chair and things get really bad… *diabolical music plays in the background* Alright, I did it (or rather didn’t do it)!  I didn’t finish my workout from yesterday!  Before you jump to conclusions and assume (correctly, I might add) that I was just being lazy, I’ll have you know that I was busy and the night was over before I knew it.  The day was not totally lost, however.  I did manage to do the sit up workout before I went to bed.  To atone for my sin of heresy against the church workout schedule, I’ve decided to fit in the Body Rock workout from yesterday into today’s routine.  If you have no idea what inspired the melodramatic confession seen above, then you obviously haven’t seen the Monty Python sketch “The Spanish Inquisition.”  Prepare to be enlightened.

Sit up workout details (Day 2, second column):

  • 21, 28, 21, 21, 28; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 119 total

Some of you are probably wondering where the trivia question is.  I will include a new Navy trivia question in tonight’s post, so make sure to check back in later.  I promise that tonight will not be a repeat of last night’s fiasco; I will do my exercises and write a new post like the fate of the world depends on its completion.  See you then!

When in Rome…

I hope everybody had a great weekend!  Mine was definitely pretty good.  Glenn’s at it again!  He was the first to respond with the correct answer to the lifeline trivia question: lines erected around the weather decks of a ship to prevent personnel from falling or being washed over the side.  We’ll see if he/the rest of you are able to guess the meaning of today’s word :)

Navy trivia of the day

  • What does the term tattoo mean?

It was certainly hard to start working out again after having yesterday off, but I felt really good when I saw that today was the first day of Week 3 for my sit up workout.  I’ve never stayed with the program long enough to get to Week 3–it seems that having a blog and boot camp in August is quite motivating.  Along with the sit ups I also completed the Day 4 exercises of the Body Rock workout.  I thought I’d try posting the Body Rock video for today’s exercises, so let me know if you want me to do the same in the future.

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • Since there are only 4 combinations, each was repeated 3 times (hence the three numbers)
  • Burpee, push up: 6, 8, 10
  • Reverse pull up: 13, 19 squat jumps, 22 squat jumps
  • Triple plank jumps: 4, 2.5, 3.5
  • Sit up/grab knees: 10, 14, 17

Sit up workout details (Day 1, second column):

  • 18, 25, 19, 19, 25; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 106 total

As always, thanks for the support!  Hopefully the weather will be nice tomorrow so I’ll have a chance to take the dog to the park and get in a run before celebrating my grandfather’s birthday at dinner, so stay tuned to find out.  Keep up the good work and send in your trivia responses!

Too tired to title

I apologize in advance if this post contains nonsense words, fragment sentences, and incorrect quotes.  The Body Rock workout has killed my arms (and probably some of my short-term brain function), so typing is not my friend right now.  Lostartpublishing has done it again!  Responding with the correct answer to the rack trivia question–a bed, BTW–you have been awarded 100 points and moved to first place in the leader board.

Navy trivia of the day

  • What does the term quarters mean?

Like I mentioned above, Body Rock and sit ups were on the menu for today.  Not going to lie, it was tough.  Tough enough for me not to explain, because I’d have to type some more.

Sit up workout details (Day 3, second column):

  • 18, 20, 15, 15, 23; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 91 total

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • Superman push ups: 10
  • Elevated push ups, L&R knee to elbow touch: 7
  • Squat and press: 25
  • Squat jump, jump forward, 3 squat jumps: 6
  • Push ups (box style): 22
  • L&R side jump Burpee, 2 knee to elbow oblique abs (modified), tuck jump center: 1.5
  • Forward lunge, side lunge, knee lift: 10
  • Close push up (modified), Burpee, sumo L&R knee touch: 5
  • Tricep dip, kick out: 10
  • Overhead abs: 12
  • Squat jumps: 23
  • Speed run

Tomorrow’s post will be the last one for this week, which also means it’s the last workout of the week.  YAY!  Don’t forget to check in before I sign off for the weekend!  In the meantime, how are you progressing with your New Year’s resolution(s)?  Did you make any?  Finally, don’t forget to send in your response to the trivia question.  Good luck and good night!

Megapost 2: Achieving a goal was never so easy!

As the title suggests, this post is going to be ENORMOUS.  Don’t be scared, there will be a lot of good news and fun information to learn along the way!  First, the correct answers to yesterday’s scuttlebutt question are: a drinking fountain; a rumor.  Sadly, nobody responded with both answers and consequently nobody will receive the full 100 points.  Lest you think I’m a trivia tyrant, I have decided to award Jessica 50 points for being the first to reply with the rumor portion of the answer (and a funny Little Mermaid reference).  Congrats, you’re now in first place by 50 points!  You shouldn’t get too comfortable there because the next trivia question is coming up and it’s still anybody’s game.

Navy Trivia of the Day

  • What does the phrase “turn to” mean?

Today’s workouts were pretty intense and I loved almost every second of them :)  I started out with the sit up workout before dinner and just completed the Body Rock workout.  Based on how I feel now–invigorated, thirsty, and tired–, I am very glad that I decided to stagger the Body Rock exercises to every other weekday.

Sit up workout details (Day 2, second column):

  • 15, 18, 14, 14, 23; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 84 total

Body Rock workout details (complete as many reps of each combination in 50 sec, 10 sec break between combinations):

  • 10 high knees, 10 mountain climbers: 4
  • 2 squat jumps, 2 push ups, 1 tuck jump: 3
  • 1 center to elbow jump L&R, 2 leg jumps: 5
  • 4 squat jumps, 1 push up: 3
  • 5 tuck jumps, 5 1/2 burpees to squat hold: 1.5
  • 1 spider knee push up L&R, 1 straight leg push up L&R: 2
  • 1 switch lunge and reach: 27
  • 2 side lunges, 1 L&R side punch, 2 tuck jumps: 5
  • 10 squats, 10 squat jumps: 1
  • 10 elbow to knee jumps L&R: 1.5
  • 2 wide leg jumps, 1 push up:5
  • speed run
  • OMG that was INTENSE!!!

Speaking of intense, wait until you see what’s next.  It’s been two weeks since my last weigh-in and measurement post, so I’ve posted today’s results below.

Current weight: 144 lb (-5.5 lb)

I’m hoping that this weight drop is not my cheap scale being cheap.  I guess I should have weighed myself at my DEP meeting earlier today to confirm it.  Now I guess I’ll have to update the weight loss major goal, since it seems that I’ve already accomplished it :) Yay!

Current measurements

  • Bust: 37 in (-1 in)
  • Chest: 34 in (+.5 in)
  • Waist: 31 in (no change)
  • Hips: 39.5 in (-.5 in)
  • Thighs: 22 in (-.5 in)
  • Calves: 13.5 in (+.25 in)
  • Upper arm: 11.5 in (+.25 in)
  • Forearm: 9 in (-.5 in)
  • Total change: -1.5 in

I’m pretty happy with these results, too.  I didn’t expect much change in either my weight or measurements given that I’ve only been doing the push ups and sit ups for the past week, but I am pleasantly surprised nonetheless.  Well, that’s about all I can do tonight folks.  I hope you’ll send in your guesses for the trivia question and stay tuned for tomorrow’s post.

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes

Okay, ladies and gentlemen.  Nobody responded with the complete answer for yesterday’s trivia question: What is a fathom?  I will give Glenn Coulter–my Dad, BTW– and lostartpublishing partial credit of 50 points each for being very close.  The correct answer (according to my little Navy book) is: a unit of length (equal to 6 feet) used for measuring the depth of water.  I’ve updated the Navy lingo page to include the correct definition, something I’ll do after every trivia answer is revealed, so that everyone can increase their Navy knowledge.  Today’s question should be a bit easier since I’m sure that most people know at least one of the definitions.  Remember, same rules and no cheating.  Good luck!

Navy Trivia of the Day

  • What does scuttlebutt mean?  There are two answers for this one.

It’s only the second day of my restart and I’ve decided to change my schedule.  Instead of doing the 30 Day Body Rock Challenge according to their schedule (every weekday) I will do those workouts Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (according to my original schedule, seen here).  Changing the frequency from every weekday to every other weekday will give my body time to recover from the workouts, especially since I’ll be doing the Cto5k running program on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.  To make a long explanation short, that’s why there’s not a Body Rock workout detail below.  The two routines I did finish today are the push up workout and the Cto5k workout.

Push up workout details (Week 2, Day 1, first column):

  • 4, 6, 4, 4, 8; performed with a 60 second rest between reps
  • 26 Total

Cto5k workout details (Week 1, Workout 1):

  • Brisk 5 min warm up walk
  • Alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes
  • I can definitely tell that I haven’t really run since Thanksgiving; it was so good to start again!

Don’t forget to send in your answer to the trivia question and check back in tomorrow for the winners and another round of exercises!

Refold!

The winner from Saturday’s trivia question was Jessica with the correct answer of Rodents Of Unusual Size!  You get 100 points! As we should all know, R.O.U.S. is a reference from “The Princess Bride,” also another must-see classic.  Although these movie trivia questions have been great fun they were merely a gateway to the new Navy Trivia of the Day section I’m introducing today.  Like the movie trivia question format, I’ll ask my lovely readers a trivia question based on the information I have to learn before boot camp.  This way I have an interesting study method and I get to test your knowledge at the same time!  And by knowledge, I mean actual current knowledge not something you googled to answer the question–yeah, I know there’s no way for me to actually check this; I’m expecting everyone to behave and follow the honor system.  Sounds fun, right?  But there’s more!  The 100 points I’ve been throwing out aren’t the fake Whose Line Is It Anyway? kind of points.  I will be keeping score and maybe, just maybe there will be a prize for the ultimate winner before I leave in August.  Everybody loves incentives, so I’m hoping that you’re motivated by points.  I mean who isn’t?  Ready to give it a try?  Same rules as before: the winner is the first person to correctly answer the question in the comments section.  Good luck!  Here’s the first question:

Navy Trivia of the Day

  • What is a fathom?

Today I was feeling much better and almost completely over my ever-changing-symptom-sickness and was able to redo the Body Rock fitness test.  The test counts as Day 1 of the 30 Day Challenge and the real workouts start tomorrow.  In addition, I started the second week of the sit up workout.  Specifics from both programs can be seen below.

Sit up workout details (Day 1, second column):

  • 14, 17, 12, 12, 20; performed with 60 second break between reps
  • 75 total

Body Rock fitness test results

  • Squat jumps: 27
  • Push ups (regular): 10
  • Burpees: 6
  • High knees: 97
  • Switch lunges (slower version): 20
  • Tuck jumps: 14
  • Straight abs: 12

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s workouts which will include my first running day!  In the meantime, send in those trivia answers and don’t cheat!

It’s not a sign, but maybe it’s a warning

My sore throat was a little bit better this morning, but all is not well.  I have developed an inflamed feeling at the back of my mouth and throat and an occasional cough.  Taking my sickness into consideration I decided to modify today’s schedule; I cut the Body Rock workout and the Cto5k run, leaving just the push up workout.  This way I’ll still be doing some sort of exercise and my body will have a chance to really get rid of whatever is afflicting me.  If I’m still feeling poorly tomorrow–fingers crossed that this isn’t the case–, then I’ll push all cardio/interval workouts to next Monday so I can start again on the right foot.  I’ve posted the details of my workout below and feel free to check out today’s entry in my food journal.

Push up workout details (Day 1, first column):

  • 2, 3, 2, 2, 6; performed with a 60 second rest between reps
  • 15 Total

It was much harder for me to do the push ups than the sit ups after the holiday break.  That’s the reason I chose to stay on the first column (1-5 push ups performed in the Initial Test), instead of moving to the second column like I did with the sit ups.  Stay tuned to see if I’ll be back to my regularly scheduled programming tomorrow or if this sore throat will turn into something much more ominous.  In the meantime, I’d like to thank everyone who has continued to follow/visit my blog and give a super special thank you to all my commenters, those comments make my day!
